No. 2 Oregon Continues Kajikawa Rampage With 8-0 (5) Win Over NU
2/7/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Through three games this year, the Ducks have reached the eight-run threshold each time and have yet to surrender a single run in wins against Cal Poly, Texas and NU. The Wildcats now are 2-2 on the season following this loss.
Northwestern concludes its Kajikawa Classic schedule at 10 a.m. CT/9 a.m. MT tomorrow morning, Sunday, Feb. 8, against California at Arizona State's Farrington Stadium.
Northwestern and starter Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) held Oregon off the board in the top of the first thanks to a bizarre double play in which a Duck runner took off on a steal attempt before the batter hit an infield pop fly. The runner simply stood on second base and never returned, prompting NU to casually double her off with such ease that the umpires had to meet before determining that what they saw was indeed what happened.
NU forced Oregon ace Cheridan Hawkins to toss 20 pitches in the bottom of the first despite going down in order, and then the Ducks and their powerful offensive lineup struck in the second for a three-run homer followed by a leadoff home run and, later, a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-0 in favor of Oregon.
Sophomore Krista Williams (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) notched NU's lone hit of the ballgame in the bottom of the third with a rocket one-hop slap off the body of the third baseman. Oregon's Hawkins gloved a pair of comebackers in the frame to help keep the Wildcats from advancing past first base, however.
Oregon got a two-out, three-run home run in the fourth inning to push the game into run-rule territory. In the bottom half, Andrea DiPrima (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) led off with a walk and gave way to pinch runner Fran Strub (Coralville, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana). Oregon got the next three Wildcats to the plate to keep its eight-run edge, which remained static the rest of the way.
Jasmine Smithson-Willett entered the circle to pitch the fifth inning for Oregon in relief of Hawkins, and she issued a one-out walk to Caylor Arnold (Mt. Gilead, Ohio/Mt. Gilead). Freshman Marissa Panko (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) ran for Arnold, but a double play ground ball ended the contest.
Wood (1-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits and seven walks with six strikeouts.
