EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 20 Northwestern is set for a light slate of competition this weekend with just one match at home. The `Cats host Middle Tennessee State at 2:30 pm on Friday.
Northwestern reached new season heights in the ITA rankings this week, rising six spots to No. 20. On the road last weekend, NU fell 5-2 to No. 6 Illinois in its Big Ten opener, then upended No. 64 Cornell 4-2.
In singles rankings, Sam Shropshire climbed three spots to No. 93. The sophomore has anchored the No. 1 position this season and is 7-5 in dual match play. Fellow classmate Strong Kirchheimer is now No. 116 in singles, and boasts an 8-3 dual match record.
Though there are no NU players in the doubles rankings, the tandem of Mihir Kumar and Alp Horoz is currently on a six match winning streak. Playing at No. 3, the pair has compiled a 7-1 record.
Middle Tennessee State is 6-3 this spring and most recently blanked Tennessee State 7-0 last weekend. Its trip to Evanston will be the team's first out-of-state match of the season. There are presently no ranked MTS athletes in singles or doubles.
The `Cats have played the Blue Raiders annually for the last six years and own an undefeated 6-0 record over them. NU beat Middle Tennessee State 4-3 last year in Nashville.
