Cold Shooting Night Dooms Wildcats in Loss to Spartans

2/10/2015 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Feb. 10, 2015

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's shooting struggles could not be overcome as the Wildcats fell to Michigan State 68-44 Tuesday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Tre Demps led Northwestern with a game-high 20 points while Vic Law contributed 9 points and 7 rebounds.

The Spartans got out to an early 13-6 lead, but two free throws by Bryant McIntosh and a transition layup by Demps cut the deficit to three.

Demps scored 9 of the Wildcats' first 13 points, but Michigan State's red-hot 3-point shooting helped them pull away. Holding a slim 16-13 lead, the Spartans caught fire from behind the arch. The guests finished the opening 20 minutes of play 9 for 18 from 3-point range

Meanwhile, Northwestern couldn't buy a bucket. The 'Cats were held scoreless for a 10-minute span as Michigan State scored 22 straight points en route to a 38-14 halftime lead.

Demps shouldered most of the Wildcats' scoring load in the first half, scoring 10 points. Bryn Forbes scored 11 points in the opening period for the Spartans.

The 3-pointers kept coming for Michigan State in the second half as they continued to build upon their lead. The Spartans finished the contest a blistering 13 of 25 from 3-point range to just 3 of 14 for the Wildcats.

Northwestern finally got its offense going midway through the second half as it rattled off 11 consecutive points. However, the deficit was too large for the Wildcats to overcome.

Travis Trice led Michigan State with 16 points while Denzel Valentine added 14.

Northwestern returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Michigan State at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tickets are available at NUsports.com or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
