EVANSTON, Ill. – Senior Fedor Baev and junior Sam Shropshire have been named team captains for the 2016 season, head coach Arvid Swan and associate head coach Chris Klingemann announced Monday.
"Chris and I are excited to name Fedor and Sam captains this year," Swan said. "The leadership and hard work that they display day in and day out on and off the court are the type of qualities our program strives for. They define Northwestern tennis and set a standard for the rest of the team to follow and learn from."
Shropshire was 5-3 in the 2015 fall season with four wins over ranked opponents. He played No. 1 singles throughout the year last season and was a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection. Shropshire opened the 2015-16 season ranked 34th in the ITA preseason poll.
Baev is one of just two seniors on this year's squad. He won a pair of matches in the fall season and is coming off a 2015-16 season in which he won 19 singles and 15 doubles matches.
Northwestern opens the 2016 campaign with a doubleheader on Sunday, Jan. 17. The Wildcats travel to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Cardinals at 9:30 a.m. before heading back to Evanston to host Chicago State at 6:30 p.m.
