PREGAME STORY: Lumpkin Embraces Blue Collar Role

EVANSTON, Ill. --
Northwestern opens up a stretch of five games at home over a six-game span to close out its nonconference slate at 2 p.m. Saturday as it faces SIU Edwardsville at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Fans are encouraged to participate in the Purple Pride Blood Drive beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Anderson Hall, located immediately east of Welsh-Ryan Arena. NU Athletics will be providing a ticket to a Saturday's game for all donors. Individuals can book their appointments now by clicking HERE, or call 1-877-LIFESOURCE. Walk-ins also are welcome. For more info call 877-543-3768.

Early-arriving Northwestern undergraduate students will receive a free special Wildcats holiday shirt while supplies last.

A win on Saturday would give Northwestern its best eight-game start to a season since 2011-12. The Wildcats opened that campaign 7-1 and started the previous three seasons with at least seven wins through their first eight games as well.

Northwestern is coming off an 81-79 win at Virginia Tech on Tuesday as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Bryant McIntosh scored a team-high 19 points, including hitting the game-winning basket with 27.4 seconds remaining in overtime. The Wildcats led most of the way including holding a nine-point halftime lead, but the Hokies rallied back. Virginia Tech scored the first four points of the extra session, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Sanjay Lumpkin and McIntosh gave the 'Cats the lead. Following a basket by the Hokies that tied the game, McIntosh got to the rim and hit the game-winner.

With Tuesday night's game at Virginia Tech, Northwestern now has played five overtime games over the last two seasons. The Wildcats are 2-0 this season in contests that have needed an extra session. On Nov. 20, NU defeated Columbia 83-80 in OT at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern has won its last four overtime games overall.

Redshirt senior guard Tre Demps is coming off a 17-point performance against Virginia Tech. He enters Saturday's contest 15 points shy of Frank Ehmann (1952-55) for 23rd place on NU's career scoring list, 20 away from Brian Schwabe (1986-90) for 22nd place and 25 shy of Andre Goode (1982-85) for 21st place.

Scouting SIUE

Yemi Makanjuola has a team-leading average of 6.7 rebounds per game. Jon Harris is in his first season as the head coach of the Cougars. He most recently was an assistant coach at California.
