EVANSTON, Ill. – Four Wildcats picked up wins Friday night, including tech falls by seniors Garrison White and Jameson Oster, but No. 7 Ohio State pulled away at the end for a 27-16 win in the Big Ten opener at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"I am proud of the effort put forth by the team tonight," interim head coach Matt Storniolo said. "We are moving in the right direction."
White got the night started with his fifth consecutive win, a 17-2 tech fall over Mike Manuche in 3:58. The 125-pounder has beaten Manuche twice already this year, both by tech falls. White led 10-2 after the first period and continued to roll Manuche over throughout the match, racking up eight nearfall points to go with four takedowns.
Oster gave Northwestern a 10-3 advantage in the early going with a 16-0 tech fall of Mike Hozan at 141 lbs. Oster led 12-0 after one period, earning 10 nearfall points in that frame alone. He chose to start on top for the second and quickly turned Hozan for the final four points of the match.
Defending Big Ten champion Jason Tsirtsis returned to the mat tonight after a five-match absence, and the third-ranked wrestler at 149 lbs. looked quite comfortable, winning a 5-3 decision over Cody Burcher in which he was in control the entire time. Tsirtsis heads into the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships with just two matches under his belt but as the second leading contestant at his weight class.
"It was great to have Jason back on the mat," Storniolo said. "He is a special talent and we look forward to watching him compete for another national championship this season."
Mitch Sliga put Northwestern right back in the dual after the Buckeyes scored a forfeit and a pin to capture the lead. Sliga won a 4-0 decision over Dominic Prezzia at 174 lbs. to tie the dual at 16. All of Sliga's scoring was done in the third period after a pair of scoreless frames. The sophomore won his sixth match in a row and remained unbeaten in duals with a perfect 6-0 record.
Chicago's Big Ten Team has just over a week off before it returns to the mat to host the Midlands Championships at Welsh-Ryan Arena from Dec. 29-30. 42 teams and over 400 competitors make this Midlands the biggest in its illustrious history.
