EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern renews acquaintances with local foe DePaul at 1 p.m. Saturday as the teams square off at Allstate Arena in Rosemont.
The Wildcats enter the contest as winners of their six games, including a 78-48 win over Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday. Alex Olah recorded his second double-double of the season and the 10th of his career, posting 21 points and 11 rebounds with 3 blocked shots. Bryant McIntosh added 14 points and 8 assists. Northwestern outscored the Delta Devils 41-21 in the second half to pull away. The 'Cats pulled down 53 rebounds as a team, their most in a game in 17 years.
A win on Saturday would give Northwestern its best 11-game start to a season since 2011-12. The Wildcats opened that campaign 10-1.
Northwestern ranks ninth in the nation and second in the Big Ten with a 1.72 assist-to-turnover ratio. The Wildcats have dished out 189 assists while committing only 110 turnovers through their first 10 games. NU's average of 18.9 assists per game ranks 15th nationally and fourth in the conference. The 'Cats have handed out over 20 assists in each of their last three games. McIntosh is averaging 6.3 assists per game to rank 22nd in the nation. He has handed out at least eight assists in a game four times this season.
The Wildcats rank second in the Big Ten with an average of 10.1 3-point field goals per game. Northwestern posted a season-high 15 triples against Chicago State on Dec. 13, ranking as a tie for the fourth-best single-game total in school history. Five different Wildcats have hit at least 12 3-pointers this year.
Olah is closing in on a milestone as he enters Saturday's contest 18 points shy of becoming the 33rd 1,000-point scorer in school history. Meanwhile, Tre Demps enters Saturday's matchup 12 points shy of Todd Leslie (1990-94) for 20th place on NU's career scoring list and 16 shy of Patrick Baldwin (1991-94) for 19th place.
DePaul leads the all-time series between the schools, 20-10, though the schools have split the last 14 meetings. Saturday's matchup is the first between the teams at Allstate Arena since a 54-53 DePaul win on Nov. 17, 2007.
Scouting DePaul
The Blue Demons fell to 5-5 following a 79-60 loss at Stanford on Tuesday. Aaron Simpson led DePaul with 16 points while Billy Garrett added 15. Garrett paces the team with an average of 14.2 points per game while Tommy Hamilton contributes 9.9 points and a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game. Simpson is shooting 51.6 percent from 3-point range. Dave Leitao is in the first season of his second stint as the head coach of DePaul.
