Northwestern Comes Up Just Short at No. 18 Illinois
11/7/2015 9:25:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Northwestern volleyball was unable to complete its comeback at No. 18 Illinois, falling to the Fighting Illini 3-1 Saturday night.
The Wildcats (13-12, 5-9) dropped the first two sets but fought back to win the third and gave Illinois (17-8, 8-6) all it could handle, but in the end, the Illini picked up their second win over the Wildcats this week.
Sophomore Symone Abbott remained the go-to player for Northwestern, racking up 17 kills on 51 attempts. She was set up, as always, by classmate Taylor Tashima, who handed out 41 assists.
Tashima's average of more than 10 assists per set continues to rank among the Big Ten's best. She currently sits sixth with 10.70 per game.
Fellow sophomore Gabrielle Hazen continued her defensive dominance, racking up seven blocks on the night. She has recorded at least seven blocks in three straight matches.
One match after moving into second place all-time at Northwestern in digs, senior Caroline Niedospial tallied 23 digs, her highest single-match total since registering 26 on Sept. 12 vs. Missouri State. Kayla Morin (14) and Rafae Strobos (12) also reached double-digits.
The Wildcats went back-and-forth with the Illini early in each of the first two sets, but Illinois used lengthy runs to put Northwestern away en route to a 2-0 lead. The 'Cats fought back to win an exciting third frame, 27-25 before dropping the fourth and final game.
The schedule does not get any easier for Chicago's Big Ten Team, but the Wildcats will return home next week for matchups with top-25 opponents. No. 4, and current Big Ten frontrunner, Minnesota comes to Evanston on Wednesday night and No. 16 Purdue visits Welsh-Ryan Arena next Sunday afternoon.
