'Cats Advance to B1G Semifinal With 4-0 Win Over Ohio State

11/5/2015 11:10:00β€―AM | Field Hockey

Northwestern rolls on to Friday's semifinal round

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Fourth-seeded Northwestern took care of business in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament on Thursday, rolling to a 4-0 victory over Ohio State at IU Field Hockey Complex.

With the win, Northwestern (13-7) to Friday's semifinal round where they'll take on top-seeded Maryland at 12:30 p.m. Cetnral time. The Terrapins held off eighth-seeded Michigan State 3-2 in their quarterfinal matchup.

The victory was the fourth consecutive for NU in the Big Ten tournament after capturing the title a year ago. The 'Cats showed on Thursday that they aren't ready to surrender their crown yet.Β

"We had a solid performance today from all lines," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "We were able to generate a lot of offense and we executed on our penalty corners. Our defense was solid, as always, and I'm very proud of everyone's effort."

After out-shooting Ohio State 29-2 in a 2-0 victory in the regular-season matchup between the teams, Thursday's contest was more evenly contested throught the opening half of the first stanza. However, following a TV timeout, the Wildcats got their composure and imposed their will on the Buckeyes.

Northwestern got the scoring started at the 18:24 mark. Lena Phillips created an opportunity near the top of the circle and worked her way toward the cage. Phillips was able to connect with Dominique Masters at the far post thanks to screen in front by Caroline Troncelliti and Masters knocked home her 16th goal of the year to give the Wildcats the lead.

It appeared NU would take the one-goal advantage into halftime, but a late penalty corner helped them tack on an insurance goal late in the period. A sweep by Isabel Flens found the stick of Eva van Agt who deflected it in for her 11th goal of the year to make it 2-0 with 76 seconds remaining in the half.

Northwestern carried the momentum into the second half and didn't let up. Another penalty corner led to the team's third goal of the afternoon. Masters' shot from the left side of the circle was redirected by Lauren Bernardi through goalkeeper Liz Tamburro's legs. The goal was the first of the season and second of her career for the redshirt junior.

With the outcome virtually decided, the Wildcats added one final goal with 3:48 remaining. Flens was able to get a charging Tamburro out of the goal and finished with a reverse chip going to her left to ice the game for NU. The tally was the 16th of the year for Flens, tying her with Masters for the team and Big Ten lead.

Northwestern finished the match with a 19-4 edge in shots, including 14-1 on goal, and a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners.
