'Cats Nipped by Maryland 2-1 in Double OT of B1G Semifinal

11/6/2015 2:48:00β€―PM | Field Hockey

Masters scores 17th goal of the season for Northwestern

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In a season that saw very few close matches go in Northwestern's favor, the Wildcats suffered another difficult loss Friday as the fell 2-1 in double overtime to top-seeded Maryland in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament.

Lein Holsboer's goal 1:46 into the second extra session gave the Terrapins the victory and advanced them to Sunday's championship match.

For Northwestern, it was the team's seventh one-goal defeat of the season, including its third in overtime to an opponent ranked in the top-15. The loss denied the Wildcats of the opportunity to play to defend its conference title from a year ago.

The defenses dominated the action during a scoreless opening half of play. Maryland prevented the Wildcats from producing much of a threat on the offensive end as NU was limited to three shots over the opening 35 minutes of play. Meanwhile, the Terrapins generated 11 shots in the first half and had seven penalty corners. However, led by the fearless Caroline Troncelliti, the 'Cats turned away the nation's seventh-ranked team each time.

NU was more composed offensively in the second half, but the match remained scoreless as the clock ticked under 20 minutes remaining in regulation. It was the Wildcats who eventually would dent the scoreboard first. The 'Cats earned a penalty corner and Dominique Masters ripped a rocket that deflected off Maryland goalkeeper Sarah Holliday and into the left side of the cage for her team-leading 17th goal of the year, putting Northwestern up 1-0 with 19:01 remaining. Charlotte Martin and Lisa McCarthy were credited with assists on the play.

Northwestern maintained the lead for 10 minutes before Maryland eventually found the equalizer. Moments after the 'Cats nearly made it 2-0 before Maryland cleared a ball off the goalline, Welma Luus trickled home a shot with 9:10 left to event the score, 1-1.

The contest remained square through the remainder of regulation. Three minutes into the first overtime session, Masters had a pair of great chances but a blocked shot and a save by Holliday allowed the match to go on. NU had another great chance moments later when Troncelliti got in alone on Holliday following a turnover, but the NU senior was unable to get a shot off against the charging Terps keeper.

The contest would eventually got to a second OT and Maryland needed less than two minutes to win the epic battle. From the left side, Holsboer entered the circle and found Carrie Hanks who got the ball back to Holsboer. The ball popped up into the air and Holsboer managed to knock the airborne ball over the top of a charging Lindsay von der Luft and into the goal for the game winner.

For Northwestern, the loss moves the team's record to 13-8 overall while likely ending the team's season and the careers of 10 seniors: Martin, McCarthy, Troncelliti, Ashley Bernardi, Lauren Bernardi, Francesca Berry, Kelsey Gradwohl, Lena Phillips, Kelley Stump and Kirsten Ward.
