As Northwestern wrestling heads into the 2015-16 dual season, NUsports.com sat down with senior Dominick Malone. The 2015 NCAA qualifier at 133 lbs. shares a little bit about Northwestern, his senior year and more in this edition of Getting to Know.
Â
NUsports.com: Why did you choose Northwestern?
Dominick Malone: "Northwestern embodies a place where you can do it all. It is a combination of the best athletics and best education possible. And, of course, I love getting to wear purple all the time."
Â
What are you most looking for in your final year?
"Having no regrets. It's easy to say "I have one more year" but now that it's here, I want to do everything I can to compete at my best every match."
Â
How did you get your start in wrestling?
"When I was eight, one of my friends on my youth football team told me his father was opening a youth wrestling club so I decided to try it out. I could barely make it through the first few practices, but there was something about it I loved."Â
Â
Describe the emotion of wrestling at the NCAA Championships.
"Indescribable. The atmosphere and electricity in that arena makes you feel like a superhero. It's awesome!"
Â
What is your favorite thing about Northwestern?
"The people here. Obviously the opportunity NU gives you is one of a kind, but it wouldn't be possible without the support of my friends, coaches and mentors on a day to day basis."
Â
Where is your favorite spot on campus / in Evanston?
"North beach (When it's nice out). Also Dearborn observatory is a sweet spot!"
Â
What are your future / career plans?
"I hope to get involved in the media industry in some way, whether that be a TV writer/director or more on the business end of it, I'm not sure yet."
Â
Describe your pre-match ritual.
"I always pace a few matches before I wrestle. I've done it ever since I first started and it helps put me in the right mindset."
Â
Greatest achievement so far?
"First time qualifying for nationals."
Â
Who has been the most influential person in your life?
"The support and opportunities given to me by both my parents is unmatched. From a wrestling perspective I would say Ralph Powers, who coached me all throughout youth, made me fall in love with the sport and taught me many of the values I try to uphold still today."
Â
Who is your favorite athlete?
"Derek Jeter."
Â
Tell us about some of your hobbies.
"Doing pretty much anything outdoors, playing any sport with friends. I play a fair amount of video games too, especially during season."
Â
How would your teammates describe you?
"I hope they would say hard-working and humble."
