Fitzgerald Named Semifinalist For Maxwell Coach Of The Year Award

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcats head coach Pat Fitzgerald is one of 18 semifinalists for the George Munger Coach of the Year Award, presented annually by the Maxwell Football Club, MFC president Ron Jaworski announced Friday.

Now in his tenth season at the helm for his alma mater, Fitzgerald has guided the Wildcats to an 8-2 record this year and the No. 20 slot in the most recent College Football Playoff rankings. This year's 10-game start is the program's best since 1996 when Fitzgerald led Northwestern to an 8-2 mark and eventual share of the Big Ten title as a senior linebacker. The Orland Park native is the second-longest tenured head coach in the Big Ten, but still one of the youngest in all of college football, and has guided the 'Cats to bowl eligibility in seven of the last nine seasons.

The list of 18 semifinalists for the award includes four Big Ten peers in Mark Dantonio (Michigan State), Kirk Ferentz (Iowa), Jim Harbaugh (Michigan) and Urban Meyer (Ohio State). The group also includes Larry Fedora (North Carolina), Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State), Tom Herman (Houston), Brian Kelly (Notre Dame), Mike Leach (Washington State), Jim McElwain (Florida), Ken Niumatalolo (U.S Naval Academy), Matt Rhule (Temple), Nick Saban (Alabama), David Shaw (Stanford), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Dabo Swinney (Clemson) and Kyle Whittingham (Utah).

Semi-finalist voting for of the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year award will begin on Monday, November 23rd and close on Monday December 7th. The finalist round will include the top three coaches as selected in the semi-finalist round. Finalist voting will open December 8th and run until December 20th. The winner will be announced on December 21st. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA Head Football Coaches, Sports Information Directors and selected national media. Dan Mullen of Mississippi State University was the 2014 winner of the award.

The formal presentation of the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award will take place at the Maxwell Football Club's National Awards Gala on Friday March 11, 2016 at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
