EVANSTON, Ill. – Nia Coffey brought down 18 rebounds and secured her 23rd career double-double with 16 points as Northwestern (2-0) rolled past Idaho State (1-1) 72-36 on Thursday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"It was grind-it-out win," head coach Joe McKeown said. "I thought we did a really good job defensively. I liked our effort and that is what we are preaching between now and when we start the Big Ten. Just get better on defense every day."
The Wildcats relied on their defensive prowess early in the game, coming up with six steals in the first quarter and holding Idaho State to just five points. The Bengals proved to be a pesky opponent, but Northwestern was able to control the game with a dominant performance on the boards.
Sophomore Maya Jonas was a key contributor on the glass, collecting a career high nine rebounds to give the Wildcats a spark off the bench.
"Maya's a great energy player," Coffey said. "I love that she's on our team because I would hate to play against her."
After jumping out to a big lead in the first quarter, Northwestern smothered Idaho State with one of their best defensives performances of the Joe McKeown era. The Bengals' 36-point performance was the lowest by a Northwestern opponent since the 'Cats held Loyola to 33 points last December.
No Idaho State player reached double figures in scoring.
Through two games this season, opponents are shooting 1 of 33 from beyond the arc against Chicago's Big Ten Team.
Coffey turned in the best individual performance of the night, tying a career-high with 18 rebounds against Idaho State.
"In practice it is all about team defense and rebounding," she said. "We are just really trying to focus on keeping our intensity up and just being really aggressive on the defensive end."
She's been in All-Big Ten form since conference play last season and reached double figures in scoring for the 17th straight game on Thursday night. Coffey surpassed 1,000 points for her Northwestern career in the victory over Howard last Sunday.
Maggie Lyon did her part as well, scoring a game high 18 points.
Northwestern will be back in action on Sunday afternoon against Western Michigan for a 2 p.m. tip at Welsh-Ryan Arena. That will be their last home game before heading to Cedar Park, Texas, for the 2015 Lone Star Showcase.
