EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern guard Ashley Deary turned in a career day on Sunday with 25 points and 12 assists (both career highs) to help lead the 20th-ranked Wildcats (3-0) over Western Michigan, 86-62.
"She's a great player," Maggie Lyon said. "In my opinion, she's the best defender in the country. I would not want to play against her ever."
For long stretches of Sunday afternoon's game, it was the Ashley Deary show.
The junior guard turned in a career-high scoring and assist performance, pouring in 25 points and 12 dimes to lead the Wildcats. Deary has been a defensive force this season, but her scoring explosion against the Broncos provided Northwestern with a boost when it needed it most.
"We just had to get going and get our team going, [whether] it was me hitting some shots or me getting my teammates open shots," Deary said.
Deary's double-double proved to be the difference in a tight first half, as she kept the Wildcats in control despite a hot start from WMU.
The Broncos came to play in the first half, trailing by as little as one point midway through the second quarter. But a 13-2 run by Northwestern gave the Wildcats some breathing room before halftime, as Joe McKeown's team found its scoring touch.
After the break, Northwestern woke up in a big way.
Western Michigan cut the lead to nine in the third quarter, the first time that any team has gotten within 10 points of the Wildcats in the second half this season. But a breakaway lay-up from Christen Inman sparked a 22-0 run for Northwestern, as the 'Cats broke the game open in the fourth quarter.
Nia Coffey put forward another impressive performance, nearly recording her second consecutive double-double with 20 points and 9 rebounds against the Broncos.
"[Nia] raised the bar, not just for herself but for her teammates," McKeown said. "You can expect the energy and the effort every night."
With the victory, Northwestern moves to 3-0 on the young season. They will head to Cedar Park, Texas, this week for the Lone Star Showcase against Eastern Washington, Creighton and East Carolina.
"It will be good to get on the road, with Ashley and Christen [Inman] from Texas, they'll have a big crew," McKeown said. "It'll be a [Thanksgiving] celebration and that will be our goal to enjoy that as a team family."
The 'Cats are back at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday, December 6 for a 2 p.m. clash with Milwaukee.
