#B1GCats Keep Title Chance Alive with 2-1 Win at Penn State
11/1/2015 2:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Another gritty performance by the Northwestern men's soccer program kept its Big Ten regular season championship chance alive as the Wildcats pulled off a dramatic 2-1 come-from-behind win over Penn State Sunday afternoon.
Despite being outshot 19-5 in the contest, the Wildcats were able to find the right rhythm at the right time as they scored a pair of goals in a span of 2:33 to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
Pennsylvania natives Mike Roberg and Nathan Dearth each scored for the Wildcats in the trip back to their home state.
"Penn State really played well and probably deserved better," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "Our group has been resilient in that we don't care what the shot totals are, we just hang around and try to give ourselves a chance to win. For Nate Dearth and Mike Roberge, our two Pennsylvania guys to score the goals was quite a thrill. We will enjoy this one before we get ready to take on a tough Wisconsin team on Wednesday."
Chicago's Big Ten Team is now tied for second in the Big Ten with 12 points (4-3-0 record) with one game remaining. Ohio State sits one point ahead of the Wildcats with 13 points. Both teams finish the regular season on Wednesday with the 'Cats traveling to Wisconsin and the Buckeyes hosting Michigan. A win by Northwestern and a tie or loss by the Buckeyes would give the Wildcats at least a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.
Rutgers is tied with the Wildcats with 12 points and finishes the regular season on Wednesday at Maryland.
Before the Wildcats could worry about Wednesday's matchup against Wisconsin, they had to get through a tough Penn State opponent that jumped ahead early with a goal from Connor Maloney in the 11th minute. Northwestern managed just one shot in the first half as they trailed at the break, 1-0.
The defense clamped down in the second half as senior Zak Allen was forced to make just two of his six saves in the contest, allowing the Wildcats to complete the comeback.
The heroics started in the 79th minute when senior Joey Calistri played facilitator and nutmegged the defender to put junior Mike Roberge in open space where he fired a home a shot in the top right corner from 8 yards out for the equalizer. The assist was Calistri's team-leading fifth of the season while the goal was Roberge's third.
The 'Cats pounced again just 2:33 later for what proved to be the game-winning goal. Freshman Camden Buescher took a corner kick and played a perfect ball to senior Henry Herrill, who headed a shot on goal only for it to be saved. The Nittany Lions attempted to clear the ball, but junior Nathan Dearth was in the right place at the right time and made a sliding deflection to find the back of the net for his first career goal.
The Wildcats and Badgers will kickoff Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on BTN Plus.
