'Cats Fall at Wisconsin, 2-1; Face Rutgers in Big Ten Tournament

MADISON, Wis. —
Northwestern jumped out to a 1-0 lead Wednesday as it looked to secure home field advantage in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, but Wisconsin scored a pair of unanswered goals and the Wildcats fell on the road, 2-1.

The Wildcats finished the regular season tied for third in the Big Ten with 12 points after being picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches poll. The 'Cats earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament after goal-differential tiebreakers and will travel east to take on No. 4-seed Rutgers Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.

Chicago's Big Ten Team took the lead in the 20th minute on a great counter attack by senior Joey Calistri and junior Mike Roberge. Calistri worked up the left side by his defender and attacked the end line allowing Roberge to find an opening in the middle of the field for his team-leading fourth goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.

The 'Cats were called for a foul in the box in the 41st minute when sophomore Elo Ozumba made an attempt to clear the ball and unlucky timing resulted in a Wisconsin player cutting in front and drawing a foul. Senior Zak Allen made a spectacular diving sive to his left to make the initial save, but Isaac Shlenker found the rebound and sent it back into the box where Luc Kazmierczak headed it home to tie the game, 1-1.

"We played well and we were ready to play," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "The goal we scored was one of the best goals of the season in terms of Joey getting to the end line and finding Mike. We were really unfortunate on the penalty kick. We looked to clear the ball and the guy cut in front at the least minute, but it was in the box so the ref had no other recourse than to point to the spot. I'm really disappointed because Zak made the save and we didn't save the rebound. We've had our share of breaks this year and tonight we were just a little bit unlucky."

The Badgers scored the game winner in the 68th minute on a goal by Mark Segbers that was assisted by Drew Conner. Senior Joey Calistri nearly tied the game just two minutes later on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, but Adrian Remeniuk made a diving save of his own to protect the 2-1 lead.

"In the second half there was a little bit of a lul and as a coach you get a feeling that something bad might happen. We threw the kitchen sink at them and gave them everything we had. I'm encouraged coming out of this game and I'm looking forward to what we have as we get ready to go to Rutgers. It'll be exciting for me to go home and we should have good support out there."

Northwestern outshot the Badgers 13-9 on the evening and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
