Wildcats Drop Heart-Breaker in OT to Stanford, 3-2

Flens tallies two goals for Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Isabel Flens scored a pair of goals, including one that tied the game with 3:35 remaining in regulation, but No. 14 Northwestern was edged in overtime by No. 9 Stanford 3-2 Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats dominated the game statistically and in terms of flow of the game, but the Cardinal got the decisive sudden-victory goal 2:17 into the first overtime period.
NU finished the match with advantages of 15-9 in shots and 11-5 in penalty corners, but the visitors made the most of their limited scoring opportunities. The narrow defeat was the third by the 'Cats by a one-goal margin against a top-10 ranked team this season.
It was the Wildcats who got on the board first at the 20:47 mark as Northwestern earned a penalty corner and Flens knocked one past Stanford goalie Dulcie Davies to make it 1-0. Lisa McCarthy and Sophia Miller were credited with assists on the play.
Stanford evened the score a little over four minutes later, though. Fran Tew entered the circle from the left side and fed a pass to Maddie Secco who found herself along with NU keeper Lindsay von der Luft and Secco was able to finish to even things up at a goal apiece.
Even though the Wildcats controlled possession for the majority of the opening 35 minutes of play, it was the Cardinal that had the lead at halftime. A penalty corner in the final minute of the half resulted in a goal by Caroline Beaudoin with just 52 seconds remaining to make it 2-1 Stanford at the break.
As the second half started and eventually progressed, Northwestern continually pushed forward as it went in search of tying goal. Despite numerous quality chances, the 'Cats were unable to convert as the Stanford defense was up to the task. Finally, as the clock ticked under four minutes remaining in regulation, the Wildcats converted off their 10th corner of the day. The same trio that hooked up on the first goal of the match teamed up on the game-tying score as Flens ripped one past Davies for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
Northwestern had one more opportunity to go in front a minute later when it earned another corner, but Davies made a diving save on Flens to keep the game tied. Stanford had a golden opportunity to win the game in the last minute of regulation when it was awarded three penalty corners, including two with no time remaining, but the Wildcats stopped them each time to force the contest into overtime.
In the extra session, Lauren Becker was able to get in on a charging von der Luft and make a pass to Sarah Helgeson who finished into an open cage for the game-winner.
Northwestern (9-5) returns to action at 3 p.m. next Friday, Oct. 16 when it hosts Michigan at Lakeside Field.
