Michigan Defeats No. 22 Northwestern, 1-0
10/8/2015 8:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan's first-half goal proved to be the difference maker as Northwestern suffered its second-straight shutout against the Wolverines, 1-0, on Thursday night.
"We got off to a slow start today," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "Michigan was certainly the aggressor and used its size and athleticism to great advantage. Credit to them for scoring a fantastic goal as well. We showed more fight in the second half, but just didn't do enough to sustain our attacks and threaten consistency. We are disappointed in the result, but hope to get back on track Sunday."
The Wildcats mustered up just three shots in the first half and gave up the game's lone goal in the 34th minute. Reilly Martin fed the ball to Corrine Harris who nailed a shot from 25 yards out through the arms of an outstretched Lauren Clem.
Chicago's Big Ten Team came back fighting in the second frame, immediately drawing a foul for a well-placed set piece. Senior Nandi Mehta launched the free kick directly on target, but U-M keeper Megan Hinz tallied her third save of the game to keep NU off the board.
Freshman Brenna Lovera, who registered two of the Wildcats' first-half shots, volleyed a shot off a Mehta corner kick, but her attempt went just wide of the left post. Senior Jennifer Korn created another quality chance for the #B1GCats in the final minutes of the contest, taking a shot from dead center, but the Wolverines once again made the save.
Northwestern is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 11, when it heads to East Lansing, Mich., to take on Michigan State. Kick off is set for 12 p.m. CT, and will be streamed live on BTNPlus on BTN2Go.
