Northwestern Places 18 Top-10 Fencers at Burton Open

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern fencing had a busy and successful day on Sunday at the season-opening Burton Open, placing 18 fencers in the top-10 across each of the weapon groups.
 
In familiar territory at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion, four Wildcats were among the best in the epee, six placed in the top-10 in the sabre and Northwestern took an incredible nine out of 10 spots in the foil.
 
Two Wildcats – Jen Yamin in the foil and Alisha Gomez-Shah in sabre – took home gold.
 
Yamin was followed in foil by Stefani Kahookele and Yvonne Chart in a tie for third and Kaila Budofsky in fifth. Mikela Goldstein was sixth, Kayla Kelch seventh, Stephanie Chan eighth, Michelle Lee ninth and Sharon Chen rounded out the top-10 with a 10th place finish.
 
Gomez was joined at sabre by Cindy Oh in second, Emine Yücel in third, Maddy Curzon in fifth, Ania Parzecki in eighth and Julia Abelsky in ninth place.
 
Mandeep Bhinder led the way for the Wildcats in the epee with a second place finish. Courtney Dumas finished sixth, Helen Foster eighth and Juliana Barrett was ninth.
