Northwestern Impresses at NU Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern fencing team opened the 2015-16 dual season with four wins at its own NU Duals event on Saturday.
The Wildcats welcomed Detroit, Lawrence, Incarnate Word and Cleveland State to the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and knocked off all four to begin the season 4-0.
Chicago's Big Ten Team opened up the day with an 8-1 win over Detroit. The teams only matched up in the epee, and Northwestern won convincingly. Courtney Dumas, Alex Kain and Ella Lombard competed against the Titans with the former two picking up three wins.
The Wildcats next took on Incarnate Word, again only in the epee, and won 6-3. Mandeep Bhinder went three for three in that dual.
Northwestern fenced a bigger lineup against Cleveland State in the third bout of the day and came away with another win, this time by a 13-5 score. The epee squad went 7-2, while foil pulled out a 6-3 decision. Sharon Chen, Lucia Procopio and Kayla Kelch all won two apiece in foil. Lombard picked up three wins in epee, as did teammate Katie Van Riper.
The finale saw the 'Cats fence a full lineup and beat Lawrence 24-3. Foil went a perfect 9-0 with Stella Pointeau, Stefani Kahookele and Michelle Lee picking up wins. Emine Yucel, Ania Parzecki and Sacha Bazzal helped the sabre team go 8-1, while epee posted a 7-2 mark with victories again by Bhinder, Kain and Van Riper.
Northwestern hits the road for the first time since Oct. 12 when it heads to New York for the Columbia Duals on Nov. 6. The duals begin at 4 p.m. CT.
