Ashley Bush Makes Immediate Impact in First Appearance

EVANSTON, Ill. – Symone Abbott led the way with 12 kills and Taylor Tashima chipped in 32 assists, as the Northwestern Wildcats (12-10, 4-7 B1G) fell to the 25th-ranked Michigan Wolverines (15-7, 6-5 B1G) 3-0 on Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

"We physically didn't execute some things after set one and it got in our heads a little bit," head coach Keylor Chan said. "You have to be more resilient and have a little more grit than that. [We] need to show a lot more fight than we did tonight."

Northwestern jumped out to an early lead in the first set, as freshman Ashley Bush made her collegiate debut for the Wildcats. The Union, Ky. native picked up nine kills in her first match of the season, but the Wolverines rallied late in the game to claim a 26-24 victory.

Bush is the latest freshman to make an impact for the Wildcats this season, as fellow first-year player Rachel Fara has also been impressive in several appearances for the Wildcats.

"It was awesome," Bush said. "The girls are really welcoming and really helped me out this game letting me know what was open and everything. It was an easy adjustment because the girls were so great."

The Wolverines pulled away in the second set, grabbing a 25-13 victory before closing out the match with a 25-18 victory in the third set.

"We need to find something here," Chan said. "There's not a lot of time left in the Big Ten and we have to find a lineup that we can go out and compete with every night."

Abbott had a busy game, as the sophomore outside hitter picked up twelve kills and two block assists. Abbott has been playing her best volleyball of the season in conference play, leading Chicago's Big Ten Team in kills through its last six matches.

Caroline Niedospial continued her climb up Northwestern's all-time digs list with 11 against the Wolverines. Her career total of 1,639 digs remains the third highest in Northwestern history, just 19 shy of second place.

The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow night for a Halloween meeting with Michigan State. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. and will be Northwestern's annual Dig Pink night.
