EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Gabrielle Hazen set a new career high with eight blocks and teammate Symone Abbott led the way with 17 kills as Northwestern took down Michigan State in four sets on Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"It's nothing other then coming together and playing for each other," head coach Keylor Chan said. "There's a mental and emotional connection that you have to have with a team. Today we had a lot of heartfelt discussions about what that meant."
Abbott, Kayla Morin and Sofia Lavin all reached double-digits in kills as part of a Wildcat attack that hit .310 in the match. The Northwestern offense was guided by Taylor Tashima, who handed out 45 assists.
The Wildcats' defense was strong Saturday night as well, tying a season-high with 14 blocks, nine of which were solo. Northwestern held the Spartans to just .246 hitting and forced Michigan State into 25 errors.
Michigan State got off to a hot start against the Wildcats, pulling away to claim the first set by a score of 25-18. But Chicago's Big Ten Team didn't waste any time in responding.
The Wildcats relied on strong play at the net from Hazen. After Northwestern jumped out to an early lead in the second set, Hazen helped the Wildcats close out the Spartans with five kills and two blocks in a dominating performance, and Northwestern cruised 25-15.
"When you're on, you just sort of ride that to the end," Hazen said. "This week we've just really been focusing on playing as a team. We talked about just doing little things for each other."
Northwestern kept rolling in the third set, cruising past the Spartans behind a strong performance from Abbott, who led the Wildcats with a match high 17 kills. Abbott hit at a .519 clip on the night.
But the story of the game was Hazen, whose five solo blocks are tied for the most by a Big Ten player this year. She also tallied nine kills with a .421 hitting percentage.
Northwestern continued to set the pace in the fourth set, forcing Michigan State to play from behind and keeping the Spartans off balance. A kill from Kayla Morin closed it out, and the Wildcats picked up their fifth conference win of the season in style.
"Our whole team played amazing, but Gabby had a really great effort and she did some things that really helped create some problems for Michigan State," Chan said.
The Wildcats are back in action on Wednesday night for a weeknight showdown with No. 21 Illinois. The instate rivals are set to meet at 7 P.M. in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
