EVANSTON, Ill. – Four Wildcats earned postseason Big Ten honors this year, the conference announced Friday.
Forward Addie Stiener was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team, while freshmen Marisa Viggiano and Kayla Sharples were named to the All-Freshman Team. In addition, senior co-captain Nandi Mehta earned a spot as a Sportsmanship Award Honoree.
Steiner has now been named All-Big Ten Second Team for two-consecutive years. The juniors' 21 points in 2015 rank sixth in the Big Ten as Steiner ranks among the league's top 10 in assists, goals and shots. Steiner started in all 19 of the Wildcats' regular-season matches and leads the team with seven goals and just as many assists.
Viggiano also made 19 starts for the Purple and White in the 'Cats historic season. The rookie midfielder tallied her first career-assist in Nortwestern's 4-0 win over Iowa earlier this month and has registered nearly 900 minutes since arriving in Evanston.
Sharples helped anchor a defense that saw a program-best 11 shutouts during the 2015 regular season. The Naperville, Ill., native contributed to clean sheets against five Big Ten opponents, including then-No. 11 Rutgers on Sept. 27.
Mehta was named as a Sportsmanship Award Honoree. Mehta's most notable performance of 2015 came in September when the senior shocked a fierce opponent in the aforementioned Rutgers with a 93rd-minute golden goal. One of two co-captains, Mehta has appeared in 60 games for Chicago's Big Ten Team, and has registered nine points (3g, 3a) during her tenure in Evanston.
The Wildcats kick off post-season play when they host Michigan on Sunday, Nov. 1, in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament.
