EVANSTON, Ill. — The women's swimming and diving squad blazes on with their season on Friday as they travel south to face inter-state rival Illinois for their first dual. The events will begin at 5:00 p.m.

Northwestern is coming off of a walloping of Chicago, UIC and Denison last weekend in which the Wildcats won 13 of 16 events and broke three pool records — Lacey Locke (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) in the 100 back, Olivia Rosendahl (Los Angeles, Calif./Immaculate Heart) from the 3-meter boards and a quartet of Wildcats at the 200 medley relay.

A slew of freshman competitors also made their collegiate debuts last weekend, highlighted by Peyton Greenberg (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual), who finished in first place in the 200 breast (2:21.37).

Big on the Boards
Led by the freshman Rosendahl, the Wildcats' divers trounced their competition at last weekend's quad meet in Chicago. She placed first in both the one-meter and three-meter boards, while breaking the pool record by 3.25 from three meters. On both boards, the Wildcats had 1-2-3 finishes. Janicia Ng (Torrance, Calif./Connections Academy) finished in second place in both competitions.

Historical Homework
The 'Cats defeated Illinois at last year's meet, 160-140. Four times, the Wildcats swept the top two spots in an event and twice, they went 1-2-3. Northwestern has dominated the Fighting Illini in their past matchups, as NU has won 17 duals to Illinois' 7. The Wildcats have not lost to Illinois since 1996, when they were narrowly edged 57-56. The most recent loss other than that one came in 1987 as the 'Cats have been 15-2 in their last 17 matchups with the Fighting Illini.

Inside Illinois
Last Friday, Illinois defeated Michigan State by a score of 182-118 and they improved to 4-0 on the season. Senior Lori Lynn set a school record earlier this season at the team's first quad meet of the season at the 50 fly (24.68). Lynn also leads the squad in the 100 fly this year, turning in a time of 55.19 at the Michigan State dual last week. Senior Sloane McDermott has led the Fighting Illini in the backstroke, as she is the team leader in the 50, 100 and 200. Junior Olivia Kassouni leads Illinois in diving in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions.

Common Connections
Senior Emily Launer (DeKalb, Ill./Rosary) was classmates with Illinois' Sarah Sykstus at Rosary High, which is in the Chicagoland area. Freshman Eryn Scannell (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) also was in the same year as Rebecca Ekblad of the Fighting Illini at their eastern Michigan high school. Illinois' assistant coach Alec Hayden was a four-year letter-winner and a two-year captain at Northwestern and, after graduation, was a volunteer assistant with the men's program.
