'Cats Continue Hot Streak at Illinois

URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Northwestern continued to dominate the beginning of their season on Friday as they defeated Illinois 173-127 and dropped their in-state rival to 4-1 on the season. The 'Cats are now 4-0.

Northwestern won 10 of their 16 events at the ARC Pool and extended their all-time series lead over Illinois to 19-7. The squad has not lost to the Fighting Illini since 1996.

Freshman Olivia Rosendahl (Los Angeles, Calif./Immaculate Heart) continues to dominate her opposition on the boards. In the 3-meter competition, she was 77 points higher than the second-place finisher, as she took home a score of 349.50. From the 1-meter boards, she scored more than 23 points better (277.95) than her next-closest competition.

The rest of the divers were also impressive as sophomore Monique Demaisip (Norwalk, Calif./Gahr), freshman Eryn Scannell (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) and freshman Janicia Ng (Torrance, Calif./Connections Academy) finished second through fourth from one meter. Ng and Scannell also finished in the top four from the 3-meter boards.

Once again, the 'Cats took home first in the 400 medley relay, with junior Lacey Locke (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Julianne Kurke (Atlanta, Ga./Parkview), freshman Alex Grimes (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) and junior Annika Winsnes (Singapore/United World College) recorded a time of 3:47.38.

Senior Ellen Anderson (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) improved on last weekend's second-place finish with a first-place finish in the 1,000 free (10:07.66). Junior Lauren Abruzzo was right on her coattails, coming in second place with a time of 10:18.58. Anderson, the member of NU's distance freestyle group, took home second in the 500-yard race.

The 'Cats finished 1-2 in the 100 back, as Locke and junior Melissa Postoll (Acworth, Ga,/Kennesaw Mountain) finished in 55.64 and 58.04, respectively. Locke and Postoll repeated the 1-2 feat in the 200 back event, as they earned times of 2:01.58 and 2:02.95, respectively.

Chicago's Big Ten Team also recorded a 1-2 finish in the 200 fly as junior Ellen Stello (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood) had a time of 2:04.37 and Grimes was right behind her at 2:04.41. Grimes and sophomore Maddy Sims (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 fly.

Winsnes was the top finisher in the 100 free, touching in at 51.68. Warren, coming off of last weekend's first-place finish in the event, recorded a time of 52.30.

Northwestern notched another number one finish as Kurke led all competitors with a time of 1:04.99 in the 100 breast. Junior Katie Branch (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Honors) recorded a fourth-place time of 1:06.91 and freshman Lyndsay Adamski (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) finished in 1:07.39 to earn fifth. Later on in the meet, Kurke competed in the 200 breast and earned a second-place time of 2:21.65.

Sophomore Mary Warren (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) competed in the 50 free for the first time in her career and recorded a season-high time of 23.38 for the 'Cats while cruising to a first-place finish.

The Wildcats took home more points as Winsnes, sophomore Sydney Modeas (East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence) and sophomore Anna Keane (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) took home spots three through six in the 200 free.

Towards the end of the dual, the the 'Cats finished 2-3-4 in the 400 IM. Stello, Modeas and Postoll touched in at 4:27.79, 4:29.99 and 4:31.54, respectively.

Northwestern wrapped up the meet with a second place finish in the 400 free relay, shaving two seconds off of last week's time. The quartet of Warren, Locke, Keane and Winsnes earned a second-place time of 3:27.17.

The 'Cats have two weeks off until they host Wisconsin on Saturday, November 14 at 10:30 a.m.
