EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Gabrielle Hazen led Northwestern with a career high seven blocks and the Wildcats tallied a season high 14 on the way to a 3-1 win over Iowa on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"I am proud of the way the girls came out today and responded," head coach Keylor Chan said. "Their resiliency will be an important factor for us the rest of the way."
Senior libero Caroline Niedospial tallied her 1,600th career dig on Sunday, and she continues to move closer to second place all-time at Northwestern. Niedospial trails Christie Gardner (2002-05) by 50.
Northwestern trailed 9-4 early in the first set but roared back to take command, pulling ahead 22-12 and then eventually sophomore Symone Abbott and junior Maddie Slater combined for a block on the final point to take the set 25-16.
The Wildcats came into the day with a perfect 11-0 mark after winning the first set and continued that trend against Iowa.
The Hawkeyes won a tight second set that saw neither team able to take command by more than three points until the very last serve by Iowa.
Juniors Sofia Lavin and Kayla Morin joined Abbott and Slater with at least five kills in the first two sets as part of a balanced Wildcat attack.
That attack came out firing to start the third game. Slater and Lavin scored the first two points with blocks as the Wildcats raced out to a 5-0 lead. Northwestern held a commanding 15-2 lead after a nine-point run that was capped with a block by sophomore Taylor Tashima. The 'Cats would not relinquish the lead and an Abbott kill took the set 25-11.
The margin was Northwestern's second largest victory in a set this year, trailing only a 25-9 win in the third set over Maryland on Sept. 26.
Northwestern has only played five sets twice this season, and up 2-1, the Wildcats sought to keep it that way.
Northwestern continued its strong play at the net as three blocks in the early going helped the Wildcats to a 9-5 lead. Lavin, Abbott and Hazen all reached double-digit kills in the match as Northwestern built a 24-20 lead. Tashima found Maddie Slater for her eighth kill of the night and match point, wrapping up the four-set victory over Iowa.
The Wildcats improved their record to 3-0 in four-set matches and 5-0 when the match goes longer than three games.
The Wildcats take a trip to the Hoosier State next weekend to face Purdue and Indiana. Northwestern and Purdue will play at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 23. The 'Cats are back at Welsh-Ryan Arena in two weeks.
