Wildcats Fall at #19 Purdue
10/23/2015 7:31:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Playing in a tough environment on Dig Pink night at Purdue, Northwestern volleyball was unable to overcome an efficient hitting attack by the host school, falling to the 19th-ranked Boilermakers 3-0 on Friday night.
Northwestern (12-8, 4-5) was successful on offense for most of the match, especially early, but the Wildcats' defense struggled to slow down a determined Purdue (16-4, 7-2) attack. The Boilermakers hit .462 over the course of the three-set match.
Chicago's Big Ten Team was led by sophomore Gabrielle Hazen, who hit at a .538 clip with eight kills. Hazen committed only one error in the match.
Northwestern went to fellow sophomore Symone Abbott early and often Friday night. The outside hitter led all players with 27 attempts and had a team-high 10 kills.
The Wildcats looked to be making a push in the third set but a 10-1 Boilermaker run midway through the set was too much to overcome, and Purdue completed the sweep with a four-point run to put the match away.
Northwestern had a balanced defensive effort in trying to slow down the Boilermakers attack. Caroline Niedospial led the Wildcats in digs for the 18th time this year with nine. Kayla Morin added eight, Taylor Tashima had seven to go with 21 assists and Katie Kniep tallied six.
The 'Cats are right back at it tomorrow night with a match at Indiana. First serve between Northwestern and the Hoosiers is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
