Wildcats Bested by No. 3 Nebraska

10/16/2015 9:12:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Symone Abbott and junior Kayla Morin combined for 17 kills and senior Caroline Niedospial chipped in 11 digs, but the Northwestern Wildcats (11-7, 3-4) fell to the Nebraska Cornhuskers (15-2, 6-1) in straight sets on Friday night.

"It came down to our ability to pass the ball and serve the ball tonight, head coach Keylor Chan said. "When we were handling the ball, serving and passing, we were right there with Nebraska. I'll give them a lot of credit, they did extremely well tonight."

Northwestern welcomed sophomore Gabrielle Hazen back for her first match since the Wildcats' win over Maryland on Sept. 26. She picked up 4 kills and an ace in her return to the court.

The Huskers got off to a hot start in the first set, pulling away late to grab a 25-13 victory over the Wildcats.

In the second set, Northwestern fell behind early before junior Sofia Lavin helped spark a rally with two kills during a 6-1 Northwestern run. Taylor Tashima led the 'Cats attack, recording assists on all but one kill in the second set. Nebraska managed a 25-18 victory in the game.

The Huskers would take the match in straight sets with a 25-19 victory in the third.

Tashima is among the best setters in the nation, averaging over 11 assists per game. She added to her season total with 25 Friday night.

Abbott led Chicago's Big Ten Team in scoring for the second straight match. Following a 17-kill performance in an upset victory over Penn State last week, she added nine tonight.

"She is starting to feel it again. She has found her legs and confidence," Chan said. "We've been working a lot with Symone on outsider hitter management. For us, it is just about getting our setter in a position where she can run the offense."

The Wildcats will be back in action on Sunday afternoon against the Iowa Hawkeyes (10-10, 0-7) at 1 p.m. in Welsh-Ryan Arena. A kids' clinic will be held after the match.
