EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 20 Wildcats will honor three deceased members of Northwestern's 1995 Big Ten Championship squad during Saturday's Homecoming game against the No. 17 Iowa Hawkeyes at Ryan Field. The jerseys of Mike McHugh (#6), Eric Lutzen (#46), and Xavier Washington (#98) will feature nameplates of three Wildcats on the 1995 roster that wore their jersey numbers and have passed away in the ensuing two decades.
McHugh, a junior wide receiver from Kirkwood, Missouri, will have 'PRICE' on his back in honor of Marcel Price. Lutzen, a redshirt freshman superback from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, will wear 'HARTL' in honor of Matt Hartl who lost a battle with Hodgkin's Disease in 1999. Washington, a sophomore defensive end from Cedar Hill, Texas, will have 'RUSS' on his jersey in honor of Bobby Russ.
Nearly 80 members of the 1995 Wildcats will be in Evanston Saturday as Northwestern recognizes the group at halftime against the Hawkeyes. That team opened the campaign with an improbable win over Notre Dame in South Bend, set a school record with nine consecutive victories during the year, won the program's first of back-to-back Big Ten titles and went to the Rose Bowl. Former 'Cats head coach Gary Barnett, inducted into the Northwestern Athletics Hall of Fame in September, will serve as the honorary captain for the game and join Northwestern captains Deonte Gibson, Traveon Henry, Christian Jones and Dan Vitale at midfield for the coin toss.
Saturday's game at Ryan Field will kick off at 11 a.m. CT and air coast-to-coast on ABC or ESPN2 (depending on location) with Dave Pasch, Brian Griese and Tom Luginbill on the call, and WGN Radio AM-720 with Dave Eanet, Ted Albrecht and Adam Hoge.
