Wildcats Win Crosstown Showdown with DePaul, 1-0

Recap by Daniel Hersh

EVANSTON, Ill. -- A 57th minute strike by junior Cole Missimo and a third consecutive shutout for senior goalkeeper Tyler Miller and the Wildcats defense was all Northwestern needed to earn a 1-0 victory over local rival DePaul Wednesday night at Lakeside Field.

It was the same formula Northwestern employed in its most recent nonconference outing one week ago, also a 1-0 win against Valparaiso, when Missimo tallied in the 53rd minute to spark Northwestern to victory. The midfielder from Dallas, Texas, now has three goals on the season and four in his career.

"What really happened with Cole is that he created that goal by defending," head coachTim Lenahan said. "The fact that he defended, stripped the guy and then finished -- that's what he's capable of."

For Northwestern, the win was its second 1-0 victory over DePaul in as many seasons and raised the Wildcats' all-time record against their Lincoln Park neighbors to 16-9-1.

Lenahan's squad controlled the action in the opening 45 minutes against the Blue Demons, outshooting DePaul 6-2 and earning six corner kick opportunities to the visitors' zero. Nikko Boxall had perhaps NU's best look at goal in the 28th minute but missed high with his attempt on frame.

With just over 10 minutes elapsed in the second half, Missimo worked to dispossess a member of the DePaul back line and calmly deposited his ensuing shot to the lower corner from 12 yards out, beating DePaul goalkeeper Mack Robinson.

"I thought we had a couple [of opportunities] in the beginning, and I got really frustrated toward the end [of the first half]," Missimo said. "At halftime, Coach said to keep our spirits up, and it felt good to get one at the beginning [of the second half.]"

The Blue Demons began to push forward in search of the equalizer after that, but Miller and the NU defense managed to preserve the shutout. The senior netminder recorded three saves on his way to extending his Northwestern career shutouts record to 33. NU has not allowed a goal in its last 307 minutes played.

Missimo finished with a team-high three of Northwestern's 13 shots for the game.

Northwestern returns to Big Ten play this weekend when it travels to perennial power Indiana on Sunday (Sept. 28). The 'Cats and Hoosiers (5-1-2) will square off at 1:30 p.m. CT in Bloomington.
