9/12/2014 12:00:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern made quick work of the visiting Youngstown State Penguins Friday afternoon to win its first match of the 2014 Wildcat Classic, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16). With the victory the 'Cats improved to 6-1 overall this season.
"It was good to get back on our home floor this afternoon," said Northwestern head coach Keylor Chan. "We had a lot of moving parts throughout the match, but the girls came together and won those critical points that always decide the outcome. We'll get off our feet for a bit and be back with the same energy and enthusiasm against Loyola tonight."
Freshman Symone Abbott had a breakout performance in her first match at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Northfield, Mich., native led all players with 16 kills Friday afternoon, hitting at a clip of .481. Both numbers are career-high marks.
Senior Monica McGreal earned her first start of the season and responded by producing her first double-double of 2014. The outside hitter notched 10 kills and 11 digs while also adding two service aces, both of which came in the first frame.
Redshirt junior Caroline Niedospial led all players with 16 digs for Northwestern, while Maddie Slater had a match-best three blocks. Freshman Taylor Tashima handed out 45 assists, one shy of matching her own career-best mark which came on opening night against Colorado.
The 33rd Wildcat Classic resumes Friday at 5 p.m. The evening session features Youngstown State and Virginia at 5 p.m. before Northwestern welcomes crosstown rival Loyola in the nightcap at 7 p.m. The 'Cats lead the all-time series against the Ramblers, 17-4.
