LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior Sami Schrakamp scored her first goal of the season on Thursday afternoon and freshman netminder Lauren Clem made eight saves to earn the Wildcats a 1-1 tie on the road in their Big Ten opener against the defending champion Cornhuskers.
In the 12th minute, Schrakamp gathered the ball in the midfield circle and took off down the field. After running past one Cornhusker, she pushed the ball to the outside to avoid another defender. Approaching the corner of the 18-yard box on the right side of the field, she unleashed a curling shot at full run with her right foot that bent up and over the outstretched hands of Nebraska netminder Kelly Schatz, stunning the home crowd.
Nebraska, the reigning Big Ten regular-season and tournament champions, pushed forward with increasing urgency as the game went on. But Northwestern freshman netminder Lauren Clem, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, was up to the challenge. Time and again the Stevensville, Mich., native stymied the home team, totaling eight saves over the first 90 minutes of action.
The Wildcats attack tested the Cornhuskers defense throughout the game, led by Niki Sebo and Addie Steiner who both accounted for three shots in the contest.
Nearing the end of regulation, the home team finally capitalized. Nebraska star Jaycie Johnson attacked up the right wing and sent a low cross towards the goal. The ball rattled around between players and deflected out to Katie Kraeutner 18 yards from goal in the center of the field, who finished efficiently into the corner of the net.
The two teams traded chances during the overtime periods, but neither side was able to break the tie as the game ended 1-1. Northwestern is now 4-1-2 on the season.
Head coach Michael Moynihan and the Wildcats are in action next on Sunday (Sept. 14) when they visit Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes at 1 p.m. CT.
