Wildcats Edged by No. 3 UConn in Overtime, 3-2

STORRS, Conn. -- Sophomore Isabel Flens scored a pair of goals, but No. 3 Connecticut got a goal late in the first overtime to edge No. 14 Northwestern 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Sherman Family Sports Complex.
"We played a very good UConn team today and I am really happy with our effort," Fuchs said. "Losing a player in overtime with a card really was the difference today. We had our chances and need to bounce back really quickly and be ready to play Tuesday at Miami of Ohio."
Flens twice gave the Wildcats the lead in the match, including scoring the first goal of the contest at the 8:30 mark when she beat Nina Klein following a penalty corner. Lisa McCarthy and Charlotte Martin were credited with assists on the play.
NU maintained the lead the lead the remainder of the half as Maddy Carpenter made five saves to help the Wildcats hold the advantage.
UConn was able to get the equalizer five minutes into the second stanza when Sophie Bowden scored off Roisin Upton's assist following a corner.
The Huskies did well to limit Northwestern's scoring chances, but another penalty corner resulted in the guests regaining the lead. Again the trio of McCarthy, Martin and Flens teamed up at 51:10, giving the 'Cats the advantage back at 2-1.
Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long as Chloe Hunnable answered just 123 seconds later off Darby Smith's assist, making it 2-2.
Both teams had opportunities down the stretch of regulation, but neither squad could convert as the Wildcats headed to overtime for the second time in as many matches this season.
NU was forced to play a player down when the 'Cats were issued a yellow card nine minutes into the extra session. Just over two minutes later, the Huskies notched the game-winner when Charlotte Veitner took a feed from Olivia Bolles in front of the cage and was able to finish, giving the hosts the victory.
Carpenter made seven saves in the contest for the Wildcats, while the defense was credited with another stop.
The contest was a homecoming for Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs who starred for the Huskies in the late 1980s. Following the match, Fuchs was honored in her return to Storrs.
"A big thank you to UConn and coach Stevens for honoring me after the game," said Fuchs. "It was great to see many of my friends and former teammates."
Northwestern returns to action at 2 p.m. Central time Tuesday when it finishes up its season-opening road trip at Miami (Ohio).
