EVANSTON, Ill -- In search of its third consecutive victory, the Northwestern women's soccer team will take the pitch on Sunday afternoon to host the unbeaten Miami (Ohio) Redhawks at Lakeside Field. The nonconference tilt is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
The Wildcats have won their last two games, both in impressive and exciting fashion. On Sunday, August 24, Northwestern won its final game at the Marquette Invitation by knocking off the 15th-ranked Golden Eagles, 1-0. Sophomore Addie Steiner scored NU's lone goal, while freshman Lauren Clem notched her first collegiate shutout in goal.
The purple and white made its 2014 debut at Lakeside Field on Wednesday, August 27 when the UIC Flames, a first-year program, came calling. Four different players found the back of the net, including Steiner, who notched the sixth hat trick in program history, as the Wildcats cruised to a 6-0 triumph. NU outshot UIC, 15-4, in the contest and Clem and senior Ali Herman combined to keep a clean sheet. The defensive-minded Wildcats have not allowed a goal since the 46:53 mark of the first game, a span of 223:47.
Steiner's 1.33 goals per game lead the Big Ten during the first week of the season, while her eight points are tied for the conference lead.
Miami is unbeaten in two matches this year, with one of those victories coming against a Big Ten foe. The Redhawks downed Purdue, 1-0, to open the season before knocking off Butler by the same score two days later. MU's victory over Purdue was its third ever against a Big Ten opponent.
Miami senior goalkeeper Danielle Wiseman stopped all nine shots she faced and recorded back-to-back shutouts at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup last weekend en route to Defensive MVP honors.
The Wildcats and Redhawks have met one other time, two years ago in Oxford, Ohio. On August 24, 2012, the 'Cats trailed, 1-0, but second-half goals by then-sophomores Georgia Waddle and Niki Sebo helped Northwestern erase the deficit and secure its second win of the young season.
Following Sunday's game, NU will be on the road for four consecutive matches between September 5-14. Next weekend the 'Cats will take on Missouri and Saint Louis before opening Big Ten play on September 11 at Nebraska. The trip concludes September 14 at Iowa and Northwestern finally returns to Lakeside Field on Friday, September 19 to host Purdue at 7 p.m.
