EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern made a statement in its 2014 home opener Wednesday night, posting a dominant 6-0 victory over UIC at Lakeside Field. Sophomore Addie Steiner used her speed and sharp finishing skills to record a first-half hat trick, the first three-goal game for a Wildcat since 2008 and just the sixth in program history.
The win was the second in a row for Northwestern, which defeated No. 15 Marquette over the weekend.
UIC, playing its first season as a varsity program, recorded the opening shot of the game, but Northwestern quickly took control of possession and never relented. NU earned a corner kick and a shot on goal on its first trip down the field and continued to generate goal-scoring opportunities throughout the night, finishing with 15 total shots to UIC's four.
Senior Niki Sebo broke through first for the Wildcats with a goal in the 11th minute. Off a throw in, freshman Michelle Manning took the ball up the right side and found Sebo on the edge of the six yard box, who one-touched it to the left of the goalie for the score.
The rest of the half was all Steiner. In the 21st minute, the sophomore flicked a header toward the net from a left side cross. A UIC defender saved it off the goal line, and in the following scrum in front of the goal, Steiner was able to sneak it past the diving UIC keeper into the left corner.
Two minutes later in the 23rd, senior Jackie Alyinovich lofted a beautiful long ball from the back line to Steiner. With skillful touches and her signature speed, Steiner beat the defense and buried a low, cross-goal shot into the left corner.
Steiner completed her hat trick off a perfectly fed through-ball from freshman Kim Jerantowski. Sprinting to the right side of the box, Steiner demonstrated excellent placement with a low chip into the left corner, which bounced slightly off the post into the goal.
With her three goals, Steiner has already surpassed her goal total from last year. The forward had two in 2013 and now boasts four in three games this season.
In the 49th minute, halftime substitute sophomore Rachel Zampa added another one for Northwestern with her first collegiate goal. When junior Nandi Mehta's free kick was punched off the crossbar by the UIC keeper, an alert Zampa quickly followed up the rebound and one-touched it into the net.
Freshman Grace Orndorff also netted her first goal as a Wildcat for NU's sixth score of the night. In the 74th minute, junior Jennifer Korn made a bouncing cross into the middle, and Orndorff swung in from the left to finish it into the right corner.
The 'Cats grace Lakeside Field again this coming Sunday, when they take on Miami (Ohio) at 4 p.m.
