The Wildcats dropped their opening match of the season on Friday, August 22, a 1-0 decision against Fairleigh Dickinson to open the Marquette Invitational. The Wildcats outshot FDU, 17-7, in that came with seven shots on goal to three. One of those three shots snuck past NU freshman goalkeeper Lauren Clem, who was one of six newcomers to make a collegiate debut on Friday.

Northwestern faced against No. 15 Marquette on Sunday, August 24. The 'Cats flipped the script and posted a 1-0 victory of their own against the nationally-ranked Golden Eagles. A late goal in the 81st minute by sophomore Addie Steiner and Clem's first career shutout helped the Wildcats secure their first triumph of the season.

Steiner's third career goal helped her earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team alongside teammates Niki Sebo, who assisted on Steiner's goal, Nandi Mehta and Jackie Alyinovich. Sebo was named the tournament's offensive MVP. The Golden Eagles represented the highest-ranked opponent ever to fall against NU in two-plus seasons under head coach Michael Moynihan.

UIC is in its first season of competition and will be facing its second Big Ten foe in a row. After the Flames opened the season against SIU Edwardsville on August 22, the squad hosted Iowa on August 24. The Hawkeyes posted a 4-0 victory at Flames Field.

Northwestern's two-match homestand continues on Sunday, August 31 when Miami (Ohio) visits Evanston at 4 p.m. In the last meeting between the two sides, NU picked up an impressive road victory in Oxford, Ohio on August 24, 2012, 2-1.
