EVANSTON, Ill. -- After two weekends away, No. 30 Northwestern returns home to host a trio of matches this weekend. The Wildcats welcome Rice on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and Cornell at 11 a.m. and Western Illinois at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Currently 4-2, the 'Cats have dropped their last two contests against top-25 opponents on the road. However, they are undefeated and have not given up a point at home. Sophomore Mihir Kumar leads the team with four dual season wins thus far, while freshmen Strong Kirchheimer and Sam Shropshire have netted three a piece.
Rice has wins against UT-Arlington and Prairie View A&M and played competitively against then No. 10 Mississippi State last weekend in a 5-2 loss. The Owls finished 11-14 in 2012-13.
No. 62 Cornell is on a three match winning streak and claims the No. 40 doubles team of Sam Fleck and Chris Vrabel. The Big Red went 14-8 last year and 3-4 in the Ivy League. This weekend's trip to Evanston marks Cornell's first away matches of the season, and they will also face Rice on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Combe Tennis Center.
Western Illinois has only played two matches so far this spring, and they take on Illinois-Chicago this Saturday before coming to Evanston. Last year, the Wildcats won 6-0 against the Leathernecks, who finished 8-17 on the season.
