EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern plays the second game of a five-game homestand Wednesday as it hosts Central Michigan. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats rolled to a 101-49 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Alex Olah recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds in only 20 minutes of action to post his third double-double of the season. Nathan Taphorn contributed a career-high 16 points off the bench. In all five 'Cats scored in double figures and NU shot 57.4 percent from the field.
The Wildcats' victory over Mississippi Valley State was noteworthy on many levels. Here are a few takeaways:
First time NU has passed the century mark since a 100-89 home win over Wisconsin March 6, 1993.
Most points in a game for the Wildcats since a 103-94 double-overtime victory over Dartmouth on Dec. 29, 1990.
The 52-point margin of victory was the program's highest since a 101-45 win over University of Chicago on Nov. 26, 1988.
The team's 54 second-half points were its most in a half since scoring 59 in the first half vs. Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 2, 2011.
Point guard Bryant McIntosh was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week for his performance Sunday against the Delta Devils. McIntosh posted 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including hitting a pair of 3-pointers, while dishing out 6 assists and collecting 2 steals in only 23 minutes of action.
Northwestern has won all three previous meetings with Central Michigan, including the two played in Evanston. In the last meeting between the squads, the Wildcats posted a 70-49 victory Nov. 26, 1996 at Welsh-Ryan Arena behind 13 points and 14 rebounds from Evan Eschmeyer.
Each of the three prior matchups between the schools came in consecutive years from 1994-96. NU hosted the first and the last meetings of that series.
Scouting Central Michigan
The Chippewas will be playing their first game since Dec. 6 when they posted a 94-61 home win over SIU Edwardsville. Central Michigan set a school record and tied a Mid-American Conference record with 20 3-pointers in the contest. Braylon Rayson paced CMU with 19 points.
Junior guard Chris Fowler leads Central Michigan with averages of 14.6 points and 6.7 assists per game. Wednesday's contest is just the second game of the season away from Mount Pleasant for the Chippewas.
Keno Davis is in his third season as the head coach at Central Michigan. He was previously the head coach at Providence and Drake and had a career record of 101-97, including a 27-42 mark at CMU.
