EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern plays its second of two home games affiliated with the Cancun Challenge on Saturday as it hosts Elon at 3 p.m.
Welsh-Ryan Arena gates will open at 1 p.m. (30 minutes earlier than normal) so that fans can watch the completion of the Northwestern football game at Purdue on the videoboards.
Following the contest, the Wildcats travel to Mexico on Sunday and face Miami University on Tuesday and either Northern Iowa or Virginia Tech on Wednesday.
Northwestern improved to 3-0 Thursday night with a come-from-behind 69-67 home win over North Florida. Trailing by seven with under four minutes to go, the 'Cats got 8 points from Bryant McIntosh and 4 from Tre Demps, including the game-winning basket with 2.5 seconds remaining, to pull out the win.
McIntosh scored a career-best 16 points in the win, including going 4-for-4 from 3-point range. He is the first NU player to hit at least four triples in as many attempts since Reggie Hearn hit all four of his attempts against Central Connecticut State on Dec. 17, 2011.
Redshirt sophomore Sanjay Lumpkin has taken his game to another level early on in the 2014-15 season. After averaging 3.8 points per game last season, Lumpkin enters Saturday's contest with a team-leading average of 11.7 points per game. He also ranks first with 7.3 rebounds per contest. Against Brown on Monday, he established a career high with 15 points. He followed up the effort by scoring 11 of his 13 points in the first half in Thursday's victory over North Florida. He has connected on 13 of his 17 field goal attempts (.765) so far this season, the highest mark by any Big Ten player with at least 15 attempts.
Northwestern won the lone previous meeting with Elon, 66-51, on Dec. 18, 2002, in Evanston. Aaron Jennings led the Wildcats with 17 points.
Elon is 0-4 all-time against current members of the Big Ten Conference (0-2 vs. Maryland, 0-1 vs. Rutgers, 0-1 vs. Northwestern) while Northwestern is 5-3 against current members of the Colonial Athletic Association (3-1 vs. Northeastern, 1-1 vs. William & Mary, 1-0 vs. Elon, 0-1 vs. UNC Wilmington).
Scouting Elon
The Phoenix is coming off a 73-60 home loss to Charlotte on Sunday. Elijah Bryant led Elon with 14 points off the bench.
Elon went 18-14 last season, including an 11-5 mark against Southern Conference competition. Team has moved to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) this season. The Phoenix is looking to replace four 1,000-point scorers from last year's squad.
Matt Matheny is in his sixth season as the head coach at Elon where he has a 77-80 record. He was previously a longtime assistant coach at Davidson.
