Northwestern Team Notes
Northwestern made its sixth appearance at Kinnick Stadium in head coach Pat Fitzgerald's nine years as the helm of the Wildcats. NU also came into today's matchup with six wins in the last nine meetings with the Hawkeyes.
The Wildcats began the day with a 16-12 record in the month of November with Pat Fitzgerald as head coach. Three of NU's four November losses over the past two seasons (2012, 2013) had been decided by a single score.
Northwestern entered the day ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten with a plus-5 turnover margin. Each team lost one fumble in today's game. For Northwestern, it was only their third lost fumble in eight games this season.
Northwestern's 31-point halftime deficit was its largest since trailing Wisconsin, 49-17, after two quarters on Nov. 27, 2010. Northwestern had not surrendered 40-plus points in a game since allowing 40 to No. 4 Ohio State on Oct. 5 of last season.
Northwestern Individual Notes
True freshman RB Justin Jackson recorded 51 rushing yards on 12 carries in the first half and finished with 96 yards on 24 attempts to fall just shy of his fourth-straight 100-yard rushing performance.
Jackson scored his fifth rushing touchdown of the season early in the second quarter.
Jackson also appeared in the starting lineup for the first time in his career today.
Junior SAF Traveon Henry achieved a career high for tackles in a game with 14, eclipsing his previous mark of 13 set last season against Michigan.
Henry strayed from his usual No. 10 uniform number Saturday, instead wearing No. 2 in honor of recently retired teammate Dwight White. White was forced to retire prior to this season due to a recently diagnosed medical condition.
Senior LB Chi Chi Ariguzo notched his second career forced fumble, punching the ball loose from Iowa tailback Akrum Wadley. NU DT Max Chapman fell on the loose ball for his first career fumble recovery.
Sophomore WR Mike McHugh hauled in a phenomenal one-handed grab at the Iowa 4-yard line, leaping and tipping the ball to himself before controlling it with one foot in bounds. The play was initially ruled incomplete but was overturned on replay.
Junior SB Dan Vitale saw his streak of 19 consecutive games with at least one reception come to an end against Iowa.
Redshirt freshman punter Hunter Niswander made his Northwestern debut, recording a 42-yard kick early in the fourth quarter.
Senior SAF Ibraheim Campbell missed his fourth consecutive game with a lower body injury.
