No. 20 Wildcats Fall 1-0 In Overtime To Ramblers
10/29/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
CHICAGO, Ill. -- No. 20 Northwestern dominated possession on Wednesday evening on the road against local rival Loyola, but fell 1-0 in overtime to the Ramblers on a cold night in Rogers Park.
Both teams entered the match knowing that goals would be at a premium. Northwestern ranks among the Top-10 in the nation in scoring defense, and Loyola had gone beyond ninety minutes in eight of their last nine matches.
Northwestern controlled the ball for much of the first half, and put together the only scoring opportunities of the first forty-five minutes. The best chance came fifteen minutes in when Brandon Medina darted across the top of the box, eluding two defenders, and let fly with a low left-footed shot that missed just wide. The two sides combined for just a handful of shots before halftime.
In the second half, Northwestern pushed forward with more urgency and were rewarded with several chances. Head coach Tim Lenahan rotated his forwards and attacking midfielders throughout the latter half of the match. A great combination between Joey Calistri and Sam Forsgren led to a golden opportunity for Jeffrey Hopson from 15 yards out, but the chance was smothered by the Loyola goalkeeper. In the 73rd minute Hopson found Mike Roberge streaking towards the far post but that opportunity was also stifled by the Ramblers keeper, and the match remained scoreless after ninety minutes, with the visitors owning a 7-3 edge in shots.
Six minutes into the extra period, Northwestern again mounted a terrific attack, with Hopson playing a lead pass to Cole Missimo who zipped by a defender and in on goal. The junior drew the defense towards him and played a short pass to freshman Elo Ozumba in front of and open goal, but the pass was broken up at the last moment by a lunging Loyola defender.
The home team headed back in the other direction with possession. With the ball bouncing inside the box, but just out of the reach of Wildcats netminder Tyler Miller, Loyola forward Brian Bement pounced and laced a shot into the back of the net to secure a 1-0 win for the Ramblers.
The No. 20 Wildcats have two games remaining in the 2014 regular-season, both at Lakeside Field where they have not played in nearly in a month. On Sunday the `Cats welcome Big Ten-leading Penn State to Evanston on Senior Day, and the club will wrap up regular-season play against Wisconsin on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Tickets are available at the entrance to Lakeside Field or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
