EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern spent the weekend prepping for its first dual meet, which is slated for Sunday, Nov. 2, by hosting the United States Fencing Association (USFA) Remenyik Open at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion on campus this weekend.
Three sensational sophomores posted the highest finishes among the nearly 25 Wildcats that participated in the tournament. Sabre fencer Cindy Oh turned in the best result with a first-place effort in the Junior Women's Sabre event on Saturday morning, while another underclassman, freshman Emine Yücel claimed fifth place in that event.
Also on Saturday, second-year fencer Stephanie Chan led 15 'Cats in the crowded Division I Women's Foil competition with a runner-up finish. Four other NU foilists - Mikela Goldstein (6th), Kaila Budofsky (7th), Stella Pointeau (8th) and Charlotte Sands (10th) also placed in the top 10 in that event.
The Junior Women's Epée competition was also held on Saturday in Evanston. Katie Van Riper and Anna Tolley were both in action with Van Riper earning a seventh-place finish.
On Sunday both the Division I Women's Sabre and Division I Women's Epée contests were held. Oh followed up Saturday's junior crown with a runner-up finish in DI, while Yücel battled her way to a third-place finish. Sophomore, and 2014 NCAA Championship qualifier, Julia Abelsky also finished in the top half of that field, checking in at seventh place.
Another Northwestern sophomore, Mandeep Bhinder, paced her squad-mates with a second-place finish in the Division I Women's Epée event Sunday. Helen Foster came in fifth in the talented field of 41 fencers, while Van Riper took 11th overall.
