EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern dominated a busy day of fencing at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion Sunday by posting a perfect 12-0 record and beating its foes by a combined score of 298-26.
The Wildcats pitched a pair of 27-0 shutouts and in five other matches, the opposition won only one bout. Michigan provided the stiffest test of the day, but the Wolverines were only able to win eight bouts against the 'Cats.
The action began bright and early with a 27-0 split-squad triumph over Wisconsin and a 24-3 toppling of Purdue. Both foil squads went undefeated in round one with Sarit Kapon, Lucia Procopio and Stella Pointeau dropping the Badgers and Kimmy Fishman, Kaila Budofsky and Michelle Lee taking down the Boilermakers.
Round two featured more split-squad matches, this time against the University of Chicago and Lawrence University. NU's squad of Cindy Oh, Ania Parzecki and part-time sabre fencer Sarah Bruhl went undefeated with the aforementioned weapon against the Maroons.
Northwestern hammered both Iowa and Michigan State by identical 26-1 scores in round three. Kayla Kelch joined Fishman and Lee to record a clean sheet in foil against MSU, while Alisha Gomez-Shah, Emily Comstock and Julia Ablesky each won three bouts in sabre against the Hawkeyes.
The fourth round saw NU take down Minnesota, 26-1, and Michigan, 19-8. The foilists performed well against the Golden Gophers as Mikela Goldstein, Stephanie Kahookele and Kapon won three bouts apiece. The Wolverines put up a challenge in foil by winning three of the first four bouts, but the 'Cats turned it on down the stretch and over came a 4-3 deficit to win 5-4. Kelch even the ledger with a 5-2 win before Stephanie Chan clinched the foil win with a 5-1 win of her own. NU's sabre and epée squads both won by similar 7-2 marks.
The Wildcats beat Florida, 24-3, in the fifth round of the meet. Sabre led the way against the Gators with a 9-0 victory when Oh, Parzecki and Abelsky won three times apiece. Goldstein won all three of her foil bouts and sophomore Mandeep Bhinder and freshman Katie Van Riper both went 3-0 in epée action.
Northwestern's second shutout of the day came against Bradley. The Braves did not field a foil squad and their sabre unit was incomplete as well. Helen Foster, Anna Tolley and Van Riper combined to go 9-0 in epée for the 'Cats.
In round eight, NU disposed of the Swarthmore Phoenix, 26-1. The foil group of Kapon, Kahookele and Fishman, and epeeists Van Riper, Tolley and Bhinder were also unblemished against Swarthmore.
Northwestern's long day concluded with another 26-1 victory, this time over Indiana. Sabre and foil both went undefeated against the Hoosiers. Abelsky, Comstock and Parzecki went 3-0 in sabre, while Goldstein, Procopio and Tina Umanskiy won three times each in foil.
The NU Duals marked the lone dual meet during the fall season. Northwestern will hit the Junior North American Cup circuit once again next weekend with a trip to Louisville, Ky. That event begins Saturday, Nov. 8.
