Roberge Equalizer Secures Road Draw With No. 10 Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Wildcats went toe-to-toe on the road with another top-ranked opponent on Sunday afternoon, earning a 1-1 double overtime draw with No. 10 Michigan State (9-3-3) in East Lansing.
The game was a matchup between the Big Ten's two top defenses, and two of the best in the nation. Northwestern entered the game eighth in the country allowing just 0.50 goals/game, while the home side was just ahead at 0.48 goals/game.
The first goal of the match came in the 60th minute, when senior Grant Wilson collided with a Spartan attacker in the box, resulting in a yellow card and a penalty shot. Michigan State converted on the shot, zipping it in the top left hand corner of the net.
Northwestern has only allowed five goals in the last nine games, and four of them have been from the penalty spot. The only one coming during the run of play was against Maryland on October 5.
Just four minutes later, the `Cats responded when junior Cole Missimo dribbled the ball into the box and took a shot from close-range. The Spartan keeper saved the initial attempt, but the rebound bounced to the feet of sophomore Mike Roberge, who quickly put it in the top left corner of the goal for his second marker of the season and the third of his career.
Senior goalkeeper Tyler Miller finished the game with two saves, but that number doesn't accurately reflect his impact. There were several crosses that never even turned into shots because he was able to either catch it or punch it out of the box. The senior goalkeeper has only allowed three goals through the run of play the entire season -- one of which was an own goal.
As the two teams battled for a game-winner, the first overtime producted a pair of scary moments. Michigan State's goalkeeper, Zach Bennett, was hit directly in the face by a hard shot from Sam Forsgren that gave him a bloody nose and left him down on the field for a few minutes, though he remained in the game. Moments later, senior Henry Herrillwas felled by a headbutt to the face while going for a ball in the air. He walked off the field under his own power but did not return to the game.
Despite action at both ends of the field, neither side could break through in overtime and the game ended 1-1.
Head coach Tim Lenahan's Wildcats(7-2-5/3-1-2) have three games remaining in the 2014 regular-season, all of which will be played close to home. Northwestern heads a few miles south to Rogers Park to take on the Loyola Ramblers on Wednesday evening, before playing at Lakeside Field for the first time in over a month, against Big Ten opponent Penn State, on Sunday, Nov. 2, and wrapping up the regular-season on Wednesday, Nov. 5 against Wisconsin in Evanston.
