COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Heading down the homestretch in the 2014 regular-season, the Wildcats visit Big Ten newcomer Maryland on Friday night at 6 p.m. CT in College Park.
Northwestern is coming off one of their strongest attacking games of the season, an unfortunate 2-0 loss to No. 15 Wisconsin. The 'Cats pressed forward intently throughout the 90-minute contest, registering a season-high 20 shots and dominating possession against one of the Big Ten's strongest squads. The Badgers capitalized on two set pieces against the run of play to escape Lakeside Field with a win. Prior to that match, head coach Michael Moynihan's squad knocked off No. 18 Illinois for their first Big Ten win of the season.
The Wildcats were catalyzed last Sunday by sophomore forward Addie Steiner, who piled up eight shots and consistently had Wisconsin defenders on their heels with her speed. The Prairie Village, Kansas, native leads Northwestern and ranks fifth in the Big Ten with eight goals this season.
Maryland is 2-1-3 in its past six matches, including a pair of one-goal wins, a pair of 0-0 draws, a 1-1 tie and a one-goal loss in overtime. The team has boasted a balanced offensive attack in 2014, with 15 total goals coming from 11 different Terrapins. Junior Shannon Collins leads the team with six assists, good for sixth in the Conference entering this weekend's action.
The Maryland-Northwestern game on Friday will be the annual "Pink Game" to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Among the promotions going on at Ludwig Field on Oct. 17 are a silent auction featuring items from Under Armour, with proceeds benefitting Headers For Hope.
