PORTLAND, Ore. -- Members of the Northwestern Wildcats traveled to the Pacific Northwest over the weekend to take part in the United States Fencing Association (USFA) October North American Cup at the Oregon Convention Center.
Four Wildcats were in action on the strips on Friday, October 10, taking part in the Division I women's saber competition. In a talented field of over 100 fencers that featured three-time United States Olympian and the nation's flag bearer during the opening ceremony in London 2012, Mariel Zagunis, NU's Cindy Oh was the top finisher among the Wildcats when she finished 26th overall.
Northwestern's Julia Abelsky, a 2014 NCAA Championship qualifier, finished 42nd, while a pair of newcomers also represented the 'Cats Friday. Emine Yücel followed up a strong showing at the USFA Burton Open by finishing in the top half of the field (49th) and Sacha Bazzal finished 78th. Yucel was eliminated in the round of 64 by the eventual third-place finished, Francessa Russo.
On Saturday, October 11, four more Wildcats were in action at the Division I women's epée event. Kaitlyn Wallace was Northwestern's top finisher Saturday as she claimed 32nd in a deep and talented field of 150. She entered the direct elimination portion of the event as the 94th-seeded fencer and she pulled off back-to-back upsets over Pauline Hamilton and Eleanor Leighton before meeting Kelley Hurley in the round of 32. Wallace dropped a tough bout, 15-7, and Hurley went on to claim a silver medal.
Mandeep Bhinder, Helen Foster and Katie Van Riper also participated in the Division I women's epée competition Saturday.
Northwestern's largest contingent was in action on Sunday, October 12 for the Division I women's foil event. A total of 10 Wildcats were in action with junior Charlotte Sands leading the group and finishing 28th overall. Freshman Kaila Budofsky and sophomore Stephanie Chan finished back-to-back at 42nd and 43rd.
