COLUMBUS, Ohio. -- Northwestern finished competition at the ITA Regional Championships on Saturday after the second and third rounds of singles and doubles play. The `Cats leave Ohio State after making sweet-sixteen appearances in both draws.

The day opened with a singles consolation round, in which freshman Strong Kirchheimer topped Michigan State's Will Davis 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Fedor Baev fell to David Vieyra of DePaul 6-2, 6-2.

In the second round of the singles draw, sophomore Mihir Kumar beat Dan Mamalat of Marquette 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Ohio State's Kevin Metka topped junior Alex Pasareanu 6-4, 6-1, and freshman Sam Shropshire fell to Metka's teammate Marko Goles-Babic in a tough contest 7-6, 7-6. Freshman Konrad Zieba was knocked out by second seeded Greg Andrews of Notre Dame 6-3, 7-5.

Advancing into the third round, Kumar battled in his third, three-set match of the tournament. He ultimately fell to the #4 seed, Ohio State's Chris Diaz, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles competition, two Wildcat pairs reached the Round of 16. Kirchheimer-Zanotti defeated Isaaks-Gomez Islinger of Green Bay 8-5 in the second round before getting knocked out by Notre Dame's Lawson-Andrews 8-1. The duo of Shropshire-Kumar beat Wisconsin's Sprecher-Jalaov 8-5 in the second round, but fell to Jesse-Gosea of Illinois 8-4. Horoz-Zieba bowed out in the second round after falling to Toledo's Singnil-Sisko 8-4.
