EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 19 Northwestern traveled to Madison Saturday afternoon and dropped a 35-6 outcome to host Wisconsin in front of 81,411 at Camp Randall Stadium.

Senior place-kicker and Badger State native Jeff Budzien converted field goal tries of 27 and 43 yards to account for Northwestern's scores on the day. His six points in the game raised his career total to 233, moving him ahead of Damien Anderson (1998-2001) and into second place on NU's career points list. Budzien trails only former kicker Brian Gowins (1995-98), who graduated with 262 career points.

Northwestern moved across midfield on its opening possession before an errant Kain Colter pass was intercepted by the Badgers defense. But just two plays later, the Badgers threw a swing pass for first-down yardage before NU's Damien Proby knocked the ball free, and opportunistic Chi Chi Ariguzo was there to scoop it up and return possession to the 'Cats. It was Ariguzo's fifth career fumble recovery, moving him into a tie for seventh on Northwestern's career list.

The NU offense picked up where it left off in terms of moving the ball, getting a 9-yard rush by Stephen Buckley to advance the ball inside the red zone. Colter was sacked on third down, however, and Budzien came on to kick a 27-yard field goal, the 35th of his career.

In addition to the forced fumble and recovery in the first quarter, the Wildcats defense got off to a superb start in the game, bottling up the Wisconsin running attack and limiting the hosts to (-15) yards of offense through their first three series. But Wisconsin broke through following a Wildcats punt when QB Joel Stave found Jared Abbrederis alone down the middle of the field for a 63-yard touchdown strike.

The Northwestern secondary would respond in fine form, however, with junior Ibraheim Campbell holding onto a tipped pass as he tip-toed the sideline for his eighth career interception. The Badgers would finish the first quarter with only eight rushing yards.

Wisconsin put together an 11-play drive midway through the second quarter, with James White plunging into the end zone from 1-yard out to put the home team in front, 14-3. With 2:03 remaining before half, the Badgers utilized their other stellar tailback, Melvin Gordon, on a reverse sweep that covered 71 yards to the end zone.

The Wildcats managed to put points on the board before halftime after Siemian found Rashad Lawrence on a 46-yard gain with less than a minute to go in the second quarter. NU would get no closer to the end zone than the 26-yard line, where Budzien was called on to boot a 43-yard field goal to set the halftime tally at 21-6 Wisconsin.

The Badgers took the opening kickoff and marched 10 plays for their next touchdown, a 1-yard pass from Stave to Jacob Pedersen. Wisconsin added one more score shortly after the beginning of the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 35-6.

RB Venric Mark started the game but did not return after the first quarter after enduing a lower body injury.

Northwestern returns to Evanston next week for its first Big Ten Legends Division matchup of the season, hosting Minnesota at 11 a.m. Saturday. Earlier in the week, Northwestern Athletics announced that the game would be NU's first Peanut-Free Day at Ryan Field, making live Northwestern Football an option for fans with a challenging food allergy.
