EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sophomore linebacker Chi Chi Ariguzo took home Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday following his career-best performance of 10 tackles and three tackles for loss Saturday against Vanderbilt.
Ariguzo's three TFL's were the most by an NU player in a single game since Quentin Davie recorded three against Rice in 2010, which also was the last time before Monday that a Wildcat garnered Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week recognition.
Ariguzo's efforts led a Northwestern defensive unit that limited Vanderbilt to just a field goal over the final 42 minutes of the game, a 23-13 Wildcats victory that gave NU its second win over a BCS-conference opponent in as many weeks. NU recorded 8.0 tackles for loss and forced three fumbles to go along with six pass breakups.
For Ariguzo, the strong outing against the Commodores came on the heels of a season-opener at Syracuse in which he recorded his first career interception and returned a fumble 33 yards for a touchdown.
Northwestern looks to continue their winning ways Saturday when it hosts ACC foe Boston College at Ryan Field (2:30 p.m. CT, BTN).
