EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will lift the lid on the 2012 volleyball season this weekend when it makes the quick trip north along Interstate 94 to Milwaukee, Wis. for the Marquette Challenge. The Wildcats will open on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. versus Bowling Green and take on Marquette at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26 in the tournament finale.

The Wildcats roster features eight returning letterwinners, including All-Big Ten honoree Stephanie Holthus and 2011 All-Freshman team selection Katie Dutchman, from the 2011 squad that posted 16 wins, three of which came over top-25 opponents. Northwestern welcomes sophomore transfer Savannah Paffen into the fold, as well as redshirt freshman Maggie Burnham and true freshmen Christine Janci and Abbie Kraus.

Stephanie Holthus Named To Preseason All-Big Ten Team Once Again
Junior Stephanie Holthus has been named to the preseason All-Big Ten team for the second straight year. The Burlington, Ill., native is one of 14 student-athletes named to the squad as chosen by the conference's 12 head coaches. Holthus tallied 4.65 points per set in 2011, good for third in the Big Ten and 36th overall in the country. She also collected 475 kills last season, ranking fourth in the Big Ten and 31st in the NCAA.

Keylor Chan Closing In On 200 Wins
Northwestern head coach Keylor Chan is closing in on 200 career wins as a head coach. In now his 14th season as a collegiate head coach, Chan owns 192 victories, including 174 as the bench boss for the Wildcats. He is the second all-time winningest coach in NU history and spent one season (1999) as the head coach at Furman before taking over in Evanston.

Road Warriors
The Wildcats will play their first eight matches of the season over three weekends away from Welsh-Ryan Arena. Last season, NU similarly kicked off the year with eight straight road contests, posting a 6-2 record during that span. Northwestern will return home to Evanston on Friday, Sept. 14, where it will play seven of its next nine matches.
